The Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle

These gardens are a real "must" for all visitors to the Merano area. They are splendidly laid out and are home to plants from all over the world as well as others more traditionally associated with South Tyrol. Paths meander through water gardens, flower-covered terraces, a Garden of Senses, a Japanese garden, an arid cactus garden and typically Mediterranean olive groves and grape vineyards. Well-known artists designed the garden's eleven pavilions and there is an aviary and grotto where an interesting multi-media presentation is shown.

The castle, now home of the recently-opened Museum of Tourism, stands majestically above the gardens. Its exhibits tell the two hundred year history of tourism in South Tyrol.
